Francis Alexander Ramsey Index Rerum
An 1842 index rerum, or alphabetized notebook intended for creating a manual, given to Francis Alexander Ramsey by his friend Thomas Turner. The rerum includes a section describing how and why the pages may be used. Biographical/Historical Note
Francis Alexander Ramsey was born to Francis Alexander and Margaret (Russell) Cowan Humes Ramsey in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 7, 1821. He graduated from East Tennessee University in 1840 and from the Medical Department of Transylvania University in March of 1842. He settled in Knoxville, where he began a medical practice. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army. After the war ended, he moved his family to Memphis, where he continued to practice medicine until returning to Knoxville in 1873. Francis Ramsey died in Knoxville on May 28, 1884 and is buried in the Old Gray Cemetery.
Ramsey married Anna Maria Breck (1824-1868) on June 2, 1842 and Cornelia Ann Andrew (1849-1880) on April 17, 1871. He had eleven children with his first wife.
