This collection contains a book of prints from the painting series "Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki" by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Dr. Otto Kopp acquired this book while serving with the United States Army in Japan in the early 1950s. The prints depict fourteenth century warriors.

Biographical/Historical Note
Utagawa Kuniyoshi was born on January 1, 1798 in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan. He is considered one of the last great masters of Japanese woodblock painting. He painted the series "Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki" over a 30 year period from 1837 to 1860. Kuniyoshi died on April 14, 1861.

This collection was donated to Special Collections in 1976.
