This collection consists of a handwritten letter from Milton Shields, at Marshall's Ferry (Grainger County), Tennessee, to Charles P. Ninney, in Russellville, Tennessee, dated September 2, 1850. In the letter, Shields urges Ninney to come visit in order to assess the state of and recommend a doctor for Paul, an enslaved man.

Abstract

This collection consists of a handwritten letter from Milton Shields, at Marshall's Ferry (Grainger County), Tennessee, to Charles P. Ninney, in Russellville, Tennessee, dated September 2, 1850. In the letter, Shields urges Ninney to come visit in order to assess the state of and recommend a doctor for Paul, an enslaved man.

Biographical/Historical Note

Milton Shields was born on December 16, 1804 in Greene County, Tennessee to James Shields (1757-1840) and Jane Gilliland Shields (1764-1849). He married Priscilla Jones Brabson on September 24, 1839 in Sevier County and they had ten children, the notable Judge John B. Shields among them. Milton Shields owned paper mills in the Knoxville area. Milton died on December 20, 1866 in Tennessee.

Charles P. Ninney was born in 1809 in Tennessee. He served on the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee.
