Abstract
This handwritten document consists of a series of letters written by brothers William and John Shields on June 20, 1800. The letter is addressed to James and Henry Shields of Greene County, Tennessee.
Biographical/Historical Note
John N. Shields was born October 26, 1792 to James (1757-1840) and Jane Gilliland Shields (1764-1849). He served in the War of 1812 and lived in Missouri before eventually settling in Bean's Station, Grainger County, Tennessee. John married Mary Gill (1806-1852) in 1823 and they had two children, Elizabeth Shields and James Thomas Shields (1824-1899). John died on October 2, 1829, and is buried in Knox County. Several of John's brothers were merchants and manufacturers in Tennessee. Among John's siblings was his brother William, born on May 9, 1787. William married Eliza Conway Shields (1795-1863) in Greene County, Tennessee, in 1817, and later was a successful farmer in Springfield, Missouri. William died September 7, 1870 and is buried in Boone County, Missouri.
