This collection houses correspondence and notes that Hobart S. Cooper created while writing his M.A. thesis, "German-Swiss Colonization in Morgan County, Tennessee" (1925). Also included are account books, letters, and other documents created by German and Swiss settlers between 1846 and 1900.
Biographical/Historical Note
Hobart Schofield Cooper was born to William R. and Isabella (Nave) Cooper on March 2, 1897. He earned his B.A. (1924) and M.A. (1925) at the University of Tennessee. Hobart Cooper died in 1959.
John Dedrick Kreis (sometimes given as Johannes Kreis) was born in Igis, Graubunden, Switzerland on August 16, 1820. He married Elisabeth Kaufmann (1824-1904) in 1840 and the couple had five children: Anna (Kreis) Bardill (1845-1902), John Dedrick (1848-1933), Leonard G. (1851-1918), Deadrick (1854-1934), and Jacob Davis (1857-). The family immigrated to the United States in 1846 and settled in Morgan County, Tennessee. Kreis served as a Trustee of Morgan County from 1880 to 1886 and died on January 24, 1892.
