This collection consists of a letter dated November 19, 1888 from Congressman Leonidas Houk to constituent Lute H. Wayland.
Biographical/Historical Note
Leonidas Campbell Houk was born June 8, 1836 in Boyds Creek, Sevier County, Tennessee. Houk worked as a cabinet maker in Clinton, Tennessee until finding an interest in law. After being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began practicing law in Clinton. Houk fought as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Following the war, Houk became involved in politics. He was a Republican and served as the representative of Tennessee's 2nd House district from 1879 until his death. He died on May 25, 1891 in Knoxville.
