Biographical / Historical
Livestock was a significant part of the Tennessee economy from its earliest settlement by immigrants, and was popularized amongst Native Americans in the area in the early 1800s. Cattle and hogs were instrumental in the development of tanneries and leather export in the state. During the Civil War, the livestock industry had taken massive losses, and tanneries became less common. Wiliam R. Brown’s tannery seems to have seen a lively business, and it may have been one of the few left in the easternmost counties of Tennessee at the time.
