Abstract
This notebook contains the handwritten business notes for the Rogersville National Bank, including the Articles of Association in 1889, meeting minutes, resolutions, the notes for selling the assets and land of the bank in 1902, and ephemera.
Biographical / Historical
The Rogersville National Bank was chartered April 13, 1889. Turning a small local bank into a national bank that issued bank notes and reported to the federal government ruffled some feathers in surrounding communities such as Knoxville and Johnson City where some people believed would serve as better locations. The bank began with a five-member board of directors with Samuel Neill serving as president. National bank notes had different designs depending on location, and named the bank which issued them; Rogersville’s ten dollar bill had an image of Benjamin Franklin flying a kite with a key attached as well as a woman clutching a narrow bolt of lightning and seated on the back of a bald eagle in flight.
On January 5, 1899, Rogersville National Bank was liquidated and its assets sold, and in July 1902 the board resolved to sell the building and land to Central Manufacturing Company for $740.
