Biographical / Historical

While it is unclear who the owner of this notebook was, it is an intriguing look into different activities taking place in rural Tennessee in the early 1870s. Lauderdale County sits at the westernmost edge of Tennessee and was formed in 1835 from land formerly part of Dyer, Haywood, and Tipton counties. Bordered by rivers on three sides, it was a strategic location that was a focus of both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Its location and later several railroad lines running through the county meant trade and receiving of goods was much easier than many rural areas in Tennessee.
