Abstract

The Illustrations for White of McKim, Mead, and White collection spans the years 1764 to 1976 with the bulk of the material from 1890 to 1906. The collection consists of photographs and illustrations collected by former University of Tennessee Architecture professor Lawrence Wodehouse for his 1988 publication, White of McKim, Mead, and White.

Biographical/Historical Note

Lawrence Wodehouse was an Architecture professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1979 to 1993. Wodehouse had previously worked as a professor of Architecture at the Pratt Institute in New York. Lawrence Wodehouse received his master's degree from Cornell in 1963 and his PhD from St. Andrews University in 1980. His major research concentrations were in 19th and 20th century architecture and also the vernacular architecture of East Tennessee, and he was the author of several books. He passed away in the spring on 2002.

McKim, Mead, and White was a well-known architectural firm founded in the 1870s by Charles Follen McKim (1847-1909), William Rutherford Mead (1846-1928), and Stanford White (1853-1906). The firm designed building across the United States and abroad, including many college, school, and library buildings including the main campus of Columbia University, the Boston Public Library, and National Museum of American History.
