Biographical/Historical Note

George Freidrich Gerding was born in Germany in 1800. He moved to America around 1825 and became a businessman in New York. Later working as a land speculator, he purchased large tracts of land in what would later be Morgan County, Tennessee. Here he started the settlement of Wartburg in the mid-1840s, with hopes to develop a string of German colonies. He died in 1884 in Anderson County.
