Biographical/Historical Note
Archibald Alexander Doak was born in 1815 to John Whitfield and Jane Alexander Doak. He was the grandson of Samuel Doak (1749–1830), founder of Washington College. He graduated from Washington College in 1833 and Princeton Seminary in 1839. He became president of Washington College in 1840 and was in the position until 1850. He was reelected to be president in 1853, but it was short lived due to Washington College shutting down due to financial issues.
