This collection is a handwritten receipt by William Polk on March 28, 1828.
Biographical/Historical Note
Colonel William Polk was born July 9, 1758 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Polk was a North Carolina banker, educational administrator, and political leader. He was also a Continental officer in the American Revolutionary War and a survivor of the 1777-78 encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. From 1806 to 1807, Polk was a member of the North Carolina Council of State. In 1827, he married Laura T. Wilson (1808-1848), and shortly after, the couple relocated to Tennessee. Polk died on Janaury 14, 1834 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
