Biographical/Historical Note
Mary Anna Amalia (Cooley) Fry was born on June 24, 1843 to Andrew J. and Ann (Evans) Cooley in Tennessee. She married a Confederate captain, George Thompson Fry (1843-1897), on April 4, 1864. After the Civil War, the two lived in Virginia; Atlanta, Georgia; and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mary A. A. Fry wrote Tennessee Centennial Poem: A Synopsis of the History of Tennessee, From Its Earliest Settlement on Watauga to the Present Time, With Short Biographies of Her Most Prominent Men, which was published in Chattanooga in 1896. Fry died on March 2, 1924 in Chattanooga and is buried in the Forest Hills Cemetery with her husband.
