Biographical/Historical Note
The Rockdale Cotton Factory opened in Lewis County, Tennessee, in 1825. The factory made cotton yarn, and the vast majority of its employees were female. The factory operated until the end of the Civil War.
A. H. Buckner was born in 1801. He lived in Maury County, Tennessee, parts of which were later incorporated into Lewis County. He married Isabella Mitchell on February 26, 1827. Buckner was a slave owner and probably an employee at the Rockdale Cotton Factory.
The McAnally family lived in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee in Maury County as early as 1860, until the Great Depression caused them to move back to their original family farm. Many of the men in the McAnally family were farmers before the Civil War and were probably associated with the Rockdale Cotton Factory.
