Abstract

This collection houses 21 volumes documenting the activities of Lucius Polk Brown's Ewell Farm and Spring Hill Plantation between 1856 and 1916.

Biographical/Historical Note

Lucius Polk Brown was born in Maury, Tennessee, to Campbell (1843-1893) and Susan Rebecca Polk (1847-1922) Brown on August 1, 1867. In 1895, he married Jessie (Roberts) Brown (1871-1897), and the couple had one child, Campbell Huxley Brown (1896-1988). Jessie died on July 2nd, 1897 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. Lucius Brown remarried in 1903 to Susan (Massie) Brown of Lynchburg, Virginia. Lucius and Susan had three children: Susan Massie Polk (Brown) Lyon (1906-1996), Lizinka Campbell (Brown) Mosely (1908-1984), and Lucia Cabell (Brown) Brownell (1910-2000). Lucius Brown managed a well-known family farm, Ewell Farm, and two plantations, Spring Hill and Melrose. He died on April 5th, 1935 and is buried in St. John's Church Cemetery in Maury County, Tennessee.

Acquisition Note

Mrs. Campbell Brown donated these papers to the University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Special Collections in 1942.
