Abstract

This collection consists of a statement made by the family of Armstead Cheatham after his death on March 26, 1923. It describes his early life as an enslaved person in Tennessee and comments on his character as a Christian and as a brother and husband.

Biographical/Historical Note

Armstead Cheatham was born around 1848 to Anderson and Caroline Cheatham. He was born into enslavement and was sold with his mother to a slave owner in Virginia. After emancipation, he moved with her to Columbia, Tennessee. He married Fannie Watkins on October 28, 1886, and moved to Nashville. He died on March 26, 1923.
