University of Tennessee Studies of Unemployment
This collection consists of two reports prepared by Dr. William E. Cole of the Department of Sociology at the University of Tennessee. The first report from 1935 outlines the first study done about unemployment in Knox County, Tennessee and was prepared with the assistance of Dr. Frank B. Ward of the Department of Economics. The second report is a supplement to a study regarding the administration of the State Department of Institutions and Public Welfare, dated February 20, 1939.

Biographical/Historical Note
Dr. William E. Cole was born on July 28, 1904, in Shady Valley, Tennessee. He attended Maryville College for a year before transferring to the University of Tennessee in 1924, where he studied agricultural education and bacteriology. Cole received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1930 and then joined the bacteriology faculty at UT. He then joined the relatively new sociology department and was named its head in 1936. He is known for inaugurating the sociology undergraduate major as well as the master's and Ph.D. programs. Cole helped organize the Tennessee Department of Public Welfare, United Way of Knoxville, and the Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission. He retired in 1966 and passed away of a heart attack on March 14, 1979.
