Abstract

This collection consists of a history of the Missionary faction of the Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee between the years of 1786 and 1945. The history was written by Katherine Baker Johnson, and the work is undated.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Missionary faction of the Baptist Church developed around 1815, when the subject of Foreign Missions was introduced to the Baptist of the Tennessee Assocation. Many Baptist churches split into two factions: the Missionary faction who advocated preaching the gospel in foreign countries, and the anti-Missionary faction who believed that God would convert foreigners in his own way. The anti-Missionary faction was much smaller and ultimately lost out to the beliefs of the Missionary faction within Tennessee's Baptist churches.
