State of Alabama Stock Certificate
This collection consists of Stock Certificate No. 123 issued for military defense by the State of Alabama to the Office of the Treasurer. The certificate is from after Alabama joined the Confederate States of America and is dated March 1, 1861. The certificate is for five hundred dollars at a rate of eight per cent. There are also several smaller stock certificates paying the bearer forty dollars, or one year's interest, on Certificate No. 123.

Biographical/Historical Note
Alabama became the twenty-second state of the Union in 1819. It seceded from the Union to join the Confederate States of America during the Civil War on January 11, 1861. It was restored to the Union again in 1868.
