Biographical/Historical Note

John Haywood was born in North Carolina in 1762. He resigned in 1800 to defend his friend, North Carolina's Secretary of State, ultimately injuring his own reputation. He returned to private practice and concentrated on working as a legal scholar through his death.

After moving to Tennessee, he served on the Tennessee Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals for a decade. He also began religious and historical writings and research. He died on December 22, 1826.
