Biographical / Historical

The Parker family traveled from England to North America in the early 1700s. It is unknown when they moved to East Tennessee, but the items in this collection are from when they lived in the Helenwood, Scott County, Tenn., area.

James Crawford (J. C.) Parker was born in 1841 to Joel and Maria Hurt Parker. He married Mary Ellen Burke (1845-1885) and together they had nine children. He served as a lawyer and judge in Scott County. Following Mary's death, Parker remarried to Martha Parker. He died in 1906 and is buried in Scott County.

Belle Maria Parker was born to J. C. and Mary Parker in 1873. She married Dr. J. Cawood Newman (1867-1931) in 1894 and they had two children, James and Luther Newman. Belle died in 1954 and is buried in Campbell County, Tenn.
