In this letter to the editor of the Richmond Enquirer, Benjamin Watkins Leigh writes under the pseduonym Algernon Sidney to defend Andrew Jackson against critics of his character and actions. The collection conists of one handmade booklet containing the article in the newspaper cut and pasted to paper. The booklet is fourteen pages and the article is titled "General Jackson. To the Editor of the Richmond Enquirer." The date December 1818 is handwritten on a page, and at the end Benjamin Leigh signed the article as "Watkins Leigh Esq of Richmond," and he wrote it under the name Algernon Sidney.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Watkins Leigh was born in Virginia in 1781. He served the state of Virginia in several capacities throughout his life, being a representative in the Virginia House of Delegates and in the United States Senate. Leigh was active when slavery was a controversial topic in American politics. He agreed with General Andrew Jackson on blocking anti-slavery bills in state and national legislature. Leigh died in 1849.
