This collection contains four letters, typed and handwritten, by Célestin Pierre Cambiaire. Cambiaire sent them in 1933 and 1934 inquiring after academic positions and opportunities, such as asking for recommendations of publishing companies for his work and possible teaching positions. The letters vary in length and topic, but they all demonstrate Cambiaire's desire for involvement in the historical community and his interest in early French and American history.

Biographical / Historical

Célestin Pierre Cambiaire was born circa 1881 in France. He taught as a professor of French and Spanish and wrote several books in his lifetime including The Influence of Edgar Allan Poe in France, The Black Horse of the Apocalypse, and a booklet called "Louis Philippe in the United States, and his Visit to Tennessee and Kentucky." By 1934, Cambiaire had found the job he was searching for in his letters. He was appointed the Professoral Lecturer on Modern French Literature at the University of Minnesota in 1934.
