Biographical / Historical

The James Gillies Monument, also known as the Bugle Boy Monument, was dedicated on May 6, 1898. The monument honors James Gillies, a young soldier and bugler boy killed in Guilford County, North Carolina, by British colonel Banastre Tarleton’s dragoons during a retreat in the Revolutionary War in 1781. The monument stands in Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. Gillies, born in 1767, is buried in a family cemetery in Guilford County.
