Biographical / Historical
David Farragut was born on July 1, 1801 near Knoxville, TN. He served in the United States Navy in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. Although Farragut was a Southerner, he took the side of the Union and was made an Admiral of the United States Navy after his service in the Civil War. Admiral Farragut died on August 14, 1870. The photograph in this collection is of his home from 1854-1858 at Mare Island, California. Farragut was stationed there to oversee the building of the Mare Island Navy Yard.
