Photograph of Civil War Army Officers
A single stereograph of United States Army officers during the American Civil War. The photo was taken by noted Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner in 1861. Eleven men are shown in the photos, some sitting and some standing. All are dressed in full military regalia. It is possible that George McClellan appears in the photographs; the photographer Alexander Gardner was an honorary captain on the staff of McClellan in 1861. The bottom of the photographs reads "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1861, by Alex Gardner, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

Abstract
A single stereograph of United States Army officers during the American Civil War. The photo was taken by noted Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner in 1861.
Biographical / Historical
Alexander Gardner was born in Scotland in 1821. After traveling to the United States and seeing some of Mathew Brady's photography, Gardner was inspired to try his own. He worked on Brady's team during the American Civil War documenting various events, but he is noted for having captured pictures of the dead at Antietam. Gardner died in 1882. There is no information regarding who the group of men in the photograph are other than that they are possibly the company of George McClellan.
