Collection consists of two copies of a typed manuscript by H. R. DeSelm titled "Results from an 1807 Land Survey of Southern Middle Tennessee." The document is a scientific analysis of results from a land survey ordered by the United States Congress in 1807 and includes an abstract, multiple charts and tables, and a list of cited literature. The copies are drafts of the paper, which was published in Castanea in 1994. The event DeSelm wrote about in this paper documented vegetation, land formations, and geography of middle Tennessee. The expedition took place from April to July of 1807, with four unidentified men in the company. Each copy of the manuscript is twenty-eight pages long, divided into a main text, literature citations, and tables.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Hal R. DeSelm was born on November 21, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout his career, he studied botany in the Southeastern United States and published several academic works like the one in this collection. DeSelm was Professor Emeritus of Botany and the Graduate Program in Ecology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He died on July 12, 2011.
