Widely seen as a war hero, Polk began a decades-long political career. At the time he received this letter in 1832, he was involved in banking. He died two years later on January 4, 1834, at the age of seventy-five. He was a first cousin of President James K. Polk.

At the time this letter was written, Foster had just finished serving one term in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
