Biographical / Historical
Volney Rowe Harris (1850-1911) was an entrepreneur from Houston County, Tennessee. Harris co-owned Harris & Buquo, a lime manufacturing company, with Henry Buquo. In 1881, Harris was elected mayor of Erin, the town in which he began his business. Andrew Jackson (A. J.) McWhirter (1851-1910) of Davidson County, Tennessee, was also a businessman. After fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War, McWhirter became involved in brokerage and commission. He served as the Commissioner of Agriculture for Tennessee from 1883-1887.
