William Gibbs McAdoo Bill of Complaint
Collection contains two documents, the original bill for "The State of Tennessee vs. The Bank of Knoxville" and a legal brief regarding Tennessee legislation related to the case. Both were penned by the Attorney General of the 3rd Judicial Circuit, William Gibbs McAdoo. The bill complaint requests the forfeiture of the charter of the Bank of Knoxville due to the failure of the owners, Dyer and Eldridge Pearl of Davidson County, to redeem outstanding bank bills. The documents are eleven handwritten pages.

Biographical / Historical
William Gibbs McAdoo was born on April 4th, 1820. McAdoo was a politican and soldier, serving in the Tennessee state legislature before fighting in the Mexican-American War. He was the attorney general for the Knoxville district from 1851-1860. He wrote several books on varying topics; from geology to his experiences during the war. McAdoo died on August 24th, 1894, and is buried in the Knoxville National Cemetery.
