Biographical/Historical Note

Elijah Embree Hoss was born to Henry and Anna Maria (Sevier) Hoss on April 14, 1849 in Washington County, Tennessee. He earned his A.B. from Emory and Henry College in 1869 and was later awarded a D.D. and an LL.D from the same institution in addition to an LL.D from Ohio Wesleyan (1906). Hoss married Abbie Belle Clark on November 19, 1872 and the couple had three children: Mary Sevier (Hoss) Headman (1874-1956), Elijah Embree (1879-), and Henry Sessler (1882-1921). E. E. Hoss was ordained a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1870 and served as a pastor in Knoxville, Tennessee (1870-1872), San Francisco, California (1872-1874), and Ashville, North Carolina (1875) before accepting the position of President and Professor at Martha Washington College (1876-1881). He went on to serve as Vice President and President at Emory and Henry College (1881-1885), teach ecclesiastical history at Vanderbilt University (1885-1890), and edit the Nashville Christian Advocate (1890-1902) before being ordained a bishop in May of 1902. E. E. Hoss died on April 23, 1919.
