A member of Captain Caswell's company, the Second Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, kept this handwritten journal between April 9 and May 4, 1847 while the unit was stationed in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In it, the author describes their participation in the Battle of Cerro Gordo. Also included is a muster roll for the company dated March 4, 1847.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Richard Caswell was born on October 22, 1809 in Tennessee to Richard W. and Sarah (Lytle) Caswell. He attended Nashville University, became a lawyer, and was appointed Attorney General of the 12th Judicial Court of Tennessee (1843) and then Attorney General of the 12th Solicitorial Court of Tennessee (1849). Caswell served as a Captain during the Mexican-American War and was promoted to Major General of the 1st Division of the Tennessee Militia on November 17, 1847. On September 15, 1831, he married Elizabeth Gillespie, and they made their home in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Caswell was murdered in August of 1862.
