Biographical/Historical Note
Save Our Cumberland Mountains (SOCM) was founded in 1972 as an activist group in Tennessee best known for its opposition to strip mining. When it was first formed, the group focused specifically on the Cumberland Plateau and the Cumberland Mountains. It later expanded to include all of Tennessee. In 2008, the board voted to change the name to Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment, thus maintaining the acronym SOCM but indicating its wider scope. The group remains active today.
