Abstract

Benjamin F. Wright wrote this letter describing encounters with Confederate sharpshooters near Bridgeport, Tennessee on March 12, 1864.

Biographical/Historical Note

During the Civil War, Benjamin F. Wright fought with Company F of the 1st Battalion of the Pioneer Brigade. This unit was formed in 1862 by taking 20 men from each unit fighting in the Army of the Cumberland and consolidating them into a single force. The men selected were talented tradesmen and were assigned to such engineering tasks as building and repairing roads, fortifications, and bridges in order to ensure that soldiers and ordnance could be moved quickly and efficiently. The unit was disbanded in July of 1864 with Pioneers with more than one year remaining to serve being transferred to the 1st Regiment of U.S. Veteran Engineers and all others being sent back to their original units. The 1st Battalion was drawn from the 14th (or center) Corps of the Army of the Cumberland.

No specific biographical information could be found regarding Benjamin F. Wright.
