Biographical/Historical Note

During the First World War, the University of Tennessee converted its active military program into a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program in an attempt to keep the University open and running while students and faculty left for war. Students who remained on campus primarily entered the Student Army Training Corps, which provided tuition and stipends for students studying both academic and military subjects.
