Biographical/Historical Note
The Maude Powell Student's Aid Fund was founded in 1902 with a $5,000 donation from the heirs of longtime University of Tennessee supporter Maude Powell. The fund's purpose was to make loans to students in financial need so that they could complete their studies. The University of Tennessee founded the Student Aid Committee in 1902. It turned over all delinquent housing, fee, and board debts to a committee headed by Charles Ferris. Any money that the committee collected was then loaned to students in financial need.
