Abstract

This collection houses notebooks, minutes, agendas, reports, and other materials documenting the Faculty Senate Research Council's work between 1973 and 1990.

Biographical/Historical Note

The University of Tennessee's Faculty Senate was formally organized in 1949 as the growing number of faculty made it nearly impossible to hold meetings of the general faculty. The group was reorganized in 1972 and is currently empowered to design curriculum to support the University's overall educational goals and to advise the President on matters affecting the University's faculty. It is also a charter member of the Tennessee University Faculty Senates, which is designed to increase communication between the Senates at the various campuses and enable UT faculty to lobby effectively at the state level.

According to the Faculty Senate's 1984 by-laws, the Research Council concerns itself with institutional policy on research grants and funding, with patent policy, with protection of investigators, with protection of human subjects of research, with protection of experimental animals, with publications, with development of interdisciplinary research, with development of specialized research facilities for intercollegiate use, and with other matters of policy pertaining to research programs. The Faculty Senate must approve all actions taken by the Council.
