This collection houses photographs, correspondence, clippings, and other materials documenting Virgina Mae Root's time at the University of Tennessee (1947-1951).
Biographical/Historical Note
Virginia Mae "Polly" Root Campbell graduated from Woodbury High School in Tennessee in the spring of 1947 and began her studies at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 1947. During her second quarter, she decided to major in agriculture and was numbered among the first female U.T. graduates in Agriculture in 1951. Virginia was the first female member of the Meat Judging Team, traveling to Baltimore and Chicago. As one of the first female members of the Block and Bridle Club, she served as its secretary and received its Merit Trophy Award. She married Hoyte Wayne Campbell (1933-2006) and the couple settled in Woodbury, where they had three sons.
