Abstract
This collection houses records documenting the University of Tennessee Computing Center from 1962 to 1990.
Biographical/Historical Note
The University of Tennessee Computing Center was founded in 1961. Its original equipment consisted of an IBM 1620, which boasted 20 kilobytes of memory and could be programmed using FORTRAN. The Center expanded rapidly during the 1960s, acquiring several new machines and accepting responsibility for student registration. The Computer Science Department was formed as an independent program in 1972 and the Center was finally given much-needed space in the Stockley Management Center in 1975. The Center began working with microcomputers and supercomputers in the 1980s and later set up campus-wide microcomputer networks. The Department of Computer Science was merged with the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering to form the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2007.
