Abstract

This register documents 89 land grants issued by the state of North Carolina between 1792 and 1794. Most of the land transferred was located in Green and Hawkins Counties, but Jefferson County and the Eastern District are also represented.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hawkins County was founded on January 6, 1787 as a county in North Carolina. It was named after Benjamin Hawkins, a U.S. Senator from North Carolina. Greene County was formed as a county in North Carolina in 1783. It was named for Major General Nathaniel Greene. Jefferson County was established on June 11, 1792 by William Blount, governor of the Southwest Territory.
