This collection houses fourteen letters sent to Robert T. Jones by friends and family serving in the Civil War. Ten of the letters are from James Thomas, and the others were written by John Williams, Daniel Thomas, and John T. Jones. Several of the letters describe the siege of Vicksburg and other battles. Most of the letters include news of other Welsh friends from Iowa. The collection also houses two photographs, one showing cannons and the other showing soldiers near rows of tents.

Biographical/Historical Note

Robert Thomas Jones was born in England in 1836 to D. M. and Elizabeth Jones. During the Civil War, he served with Company F of the 25th Iowa Infantry along with John T. Jones, William O. Jones (who was killed in battle near Atlanta, Georgia on September 5, 1864), Griffith Thomas (1837-1914), and James Thomas (1842-). Robert Jones married Dinah Davis (1839-1914) on February 11, 1864. The couple had two sons, William and Henry, and lived in a Welsh settlement in Columbus City, Iowa. Robert T. Jones died in 1919.
