This embossed scrapbook, filled with heartfelt letters from colleagues and former students, was assembled by Edith Jones and Geri Piper to celebrate Florence MacLeod's retirement from the University of Tennessee on September 1, 1962. In addition to 58 letters, it includes a guest list for her retirement party, a mimeographed copy of the presentation speech, the card they gave her, lists of names for the gift card, a record of who sent letters, the program from the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Dietetic Association, three telegrams sent to MacLeod while she was at that meeting, and six letters from other months. There are also several photographs enclosed with the letters and an AAUW Bulletin from Virginia.

Abstract

This embossed scrapbook, filled with heartfelt letters from colleagues and former students, was assembled by Edith Jones and Geri Piper to celebrate Florence MacLeod's retirement from the University of Tennessee on September 1, 1962. In addition to 58 letters, it includes items from her retirement party and other mementos from that year.

Biographical/Historical Note

Florence Louise MacLeod was born on October 25, 1896 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Joseph and Jessie (Gregor) MacLeod. She earned her B.S. (1919) from Simmons College in Boston and her M.S. (1921) and Ph.D. (1924) from Columbia University in New York City. MacLeod began her career at the University of Tennessee in 1931 as an Assistant Professor of Nutrition and retired on September 1, 1962 as Professor and Head of the Nutrition Department and Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in charge of Home Economics Research. During her career, she mentored many students, researched the need for and use of nutrients and metabolism, published in a large number of professional journals, and participated in several professional societies, national committees, and honor societies. MacLeod died in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 17, 1987.
