Association of Confederate Soldiers Cash Book

 Collection
Identifier: MS-1349

  • Staff Only

This notebook, from Foster and Webb, was used as the Financial Secretary's Cash Book for Bivouac No 2 of the Association of Confederate Soldiers, T. D. [Tennessee Division]. Its entries consist primarily of lists of members with records of their dues payments, with occasional notes such as transferred, suspended, exempt, life member, etc. There are several runs of these lists, separated by many blank pages. There is also a list for subscriptions to furnish soldiers' room and home. Later lists include the deaths of the members, often with dates, and page 134 has a list of dead comrades.

Tucked into the pages are two blank applications for a cross of honor from the Daughters of the Confederacy and the minutes of a meeting on May 27, 1916. At that meeting, C. S. Daniel was chair, and sixteen members were listed as in attendance.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Association of Confederate Soldiers, Tennessee Division, was chartered in 1887 to support Confederate veterans through monthly meetings and occasional reunions. They also founded a home for retired soldiers, cared for Confederate graves, and encouraged favorable accounts of the Confederate cause. This organization has been replaced by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Forbes Bivouac, number 2, met in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee. They were also recorded as Bivouac number 77 in the United Confederate Veterans. Their finacial secretary was Clay Stacker and two of their treasurers were Butler Boyd and T. J. Monford.
