Walter Ryall Letter
This collection consists of a letter by Confederate soldier Walter Ryall to his father Thomas C. Ryall in Shelbyville, Tennessee. The letter is written from the Tennessee State Penitentiary and is dated July 4, 1863. The letter discusses life in the penitentiary and how Ryall anticipates being moved to Camp Morton shortly after.

Biographical/Historical Note
Walter S. Ryall was born circa 1842 in Tennessee. He served in the Confederate Forces during the Civil War in Company B of the 1st Tennessee Infantry. He married Laura Cannon on October 15, 1868. They had one child, Lula L. Ryall.
