Abstract

This small pink flyer announces the intention of Andrew J. Patterson to sell the library, furniture, and property of his grandfather, the late Ex-President Andrew Johnson, on behalf of his aunt, Bessie M. Johnson. The sale would begin on August 29 and continue until completed. On the reverse, three items have been listed.

Biographical/Historical Note

Andrew Johnson Patterson was born on February 25, 1857, in Greeneville, Tennessee, to David T. Patterson and Martha Johnson. He married Martha Barkley on December 19, 1889, and they had a daughter, Margaret Johnson Patterson (Bartlett). He died on June 25, 1932, in Greene County, Tennessee.

Bessie Rumbough Johnson was born in Hot Springs, North Carolina to James and Caroline Rumbough. She married Andrew Johnson Jr. and so inherited Andrew Johnson's estate. Because Andrew Jackson died without a will, there was a dispute over his goods. After many years, his daughters agreed to buy his things at the sale advertised on this flyer.

Margaret Johnson Patterson Bartlett inherited Andrew Johnson's estate after her mother, his daughter, died. She then sold it to the United States to become a National Historic Site.
