Biographical/Historical Note

General Mason Brayman (1813-1895), was in command of the Illinois Volunteers. Brayman was an attorney, before his military service begun. He was also a military officer and the sixth Governor of the Idaho Territory.

The letter is dated April 16, 1863, and regards General Brayman's orders against spies and guerrillas in West Tennessee. "All entering the lines must report to Provost Marshall, all trading permits are revoked, all persons not in the service of the U.S. wearing any part of the uniform, will be treated as spies and guerrillas..."
