Abstract

This collection contains a ledger recording the transfer of stock at the Bank of Tennessee under President Hugh L. White.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hugh L. White was born on October 30, 1773 in North Carolina, and died April 10, 1840 in Knoxville, TN at the age of 66. He was a politician, lawyer, judge, and banker. His father was General James White, founder of Knoxville, TN. He was president of the Bank of Tennessee in Knoxville from 1812-1827. He was described as a very cautious banker and his bank was one of the few in the state to survive the Panic of 1819. He is described to have unselfish devotion to the interests of his fellow citizens.

White's 1836 presidential candidacy helped to establish the Whig Party both in Tennessee and in the South. His service in many elected offices led him to gain a reputation for competence and honesty. As a known friend of Andrew Jackson, he was unanimously elected by the general assembly to succeed Jackson in the U.S. Senate in 1825. He was reelected twice, in 1829 and 1835, and both times the vote was unanimous.
