Abstract
This collection consists of a printed slave-sale form, describing the transfer of Jerry, an enslaved man owned by Matthew Barrow, to William Donalson for $355.
Biographical/Historical Note
Matthew Barrow was born on April 23, 1784, in Greene County, North Carolina. Barrow was a businessman with a focus on finances and money, particularly real estate. He moved from North Carolina to Georgia before settling in Tennessee in the early 1800s. He held the position of Register of Deeds in Davidson County, TN. Alongside working for the county government as the retainer of legal land and real estate documents, Barrow also hired out and sold slaves for various jobs and time periods to neighboring plantation owners.
Barrowlived in Davidson County on "Barrow Hill," the name of both his home and land. Barrow married his wife, Martha Patsy “Mattie” Childress. Matthew Barrow was originally buried on his estate land on May 28, 1855.
