Biographical/Historical Note
In 1914, William H. Barnhill moved to Western North Carolina from Philadelphia to take photographs of mountain people. After a stint as a solder in World War I, he came back to Asheville where he lived until 1922 when he relocated to Cleveland. Many of Barnhill’s photographs were taken in the vicinity of Mt. Mitchell, northeast of Asheville, and in the Beech Mountain area of Madison County, North Carolina.
